Stimulating and powerful, ginseng is one of the most widely used medicinal plants in herbal medicine. But do you know all its secrets?
Ginseng (Panax ginseng, its scientific name) is one of the cornerstone plants in traditional Chinese medicine and herbal practices. This plant is believed to offer numerous properties supported by scientific research or traditional use (traditional Chinese medicine has existed for over 2,000 years).
Originally, Asian ginseng gained recognition in the pharmacopoeia of traditional Chinese medicine. Over time, other types of ginseng (with more or less similar properties) have been discovered, particularly in North America. These different varieties (Asian or North American) are available on the market; however, wild ginseng is now extremely rare.
You can find ginseng in many forms (powder, capsules, herbal teas, oil, liquid ampoules, etc.).
The form you choose depends on the intended use. For external use, oil is often preferred. For occasional use, herbal tea can be a good option. For a course of supplementation, capsules, tablets, or liquid forms are convenient choices.
The same plant is used in both cases, but preparation differs. White ginseng is dried, while red ginseng (or Korean red ginseng) is steamed before being dried. As a result, their final composition is slightly different, and red ginseng is generally considered more energizing.
Ginseng is primarily considered a stimulant, which is why it is generally not consumed alongside other stimulants (such as coffee or black tea).
Saponins, more specifically ginsenosides, are largely responsible for the properties associated with ginseng. However, the plant also contains many other compounds, including vitamins, minerals, amino acids, and trace elements.
As it may help support the immune system, manage fatigue, and promote energy, ginseng is often considered suitable for seasonal use (3 to 4 weeks of supplementation followed by 1 week off, which can be repeated if needed but not for more than 3 consecutive months), particularly at the start of autumn or winter.
This is possible, in order to benefit from the potential complementary properties of different plants. Most dietary supplements are in fact formulated with ginseng combined with other active ingredients.
Common combinations include ginseng with acerola (for ongoing fatigue) or ginseng with ginger.
