Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM): 4 Reasons to Use It

2016-10-25

Practiced for thousands of years, traditional Chinese medicine is gaining popularity in the West. Here are 4 reasons to try it!

Chinese medicine

Active Compounds of Plants Used in TCM

Considered a "gentle medicine," Chinese pharmacopeia is rich in remedies that rely entirely or partially on selected medicinal herbs. These plants and combinations of plants have been widely studied and used over centuries (traditional Chinese medicine is one of the oldest medical systems), and the scientific community has long shown interest in their potential effects.

In addition, certain plants such as ginseng or astragalus, widely used in Chinese medicine, are considered adaptogenic. This means they may help the body respond better to stress (whether physical, psychological, or environmental) and support a more balanced immune system.

TCM is a Preventive Approach

This is the founding principle of traditional Chinese medicine, which approaches the individual as a whole (body and mind), making it a holistic practice.

Unlike allopathic medicine, which treats patients with a specific medical condition, traditional Chinese medicine aims to maintain optimal health and is therefore intended for everyone.

TCM is a Multifaceted Practice

Traditional Chinese medicine is not limited to diagnosis and the recommendation of herbs. It is structured around five disciplines (often referred to as the five branches), which are both individual and complementary:

  • Herbal medicine (based on plants, minerals, or animal-derived substances);
  • Acupuncture (and moxibustion);
  • Tui na massage;
  • Chinese dietetics (a balanced diet adapted to the individual);
  • Physical exercise (qi gong and tai chi).

These five disciplines interact with one another, meaning that lifestyle habits, for example, form an integral part of maintaining good health.

TCM as a Detox Support Approach

The liver is considered a key organ in traditional Chinese medicine because it plays a central role in drainage and elimination processes. Supporting liver balance (which is traditionally emphasized in spring) may help promote overall balance.

Balance is essential in traditional Chinese medicine, as it supports the optimal flow of energy (Qi).

Approaches to detoxification as described in traditional Chinese medicine aim to support the body and mind in maintaining these essential functions.
