How to Use Essential Oils?

2016-08-25

Powerful and effective, essential oils offer real benefits for well-being and health, but they must be used with care. How? Follow the guide.

Essential oils

Follow Usage Precautions

Aromatherapy is a true therapeutic approach and essential oils contain powerful active compounds. It is therefore important to use them correctly and in specific quantities. Always make sure to follow the dosages and therapeutic indications specifically stated on the product (one oil does not replace another). If in doubt (regarding dosage or expected therapeutic use), always seek advice from your pharmacist, doctor, or naturopath. Similarly, their use is contraindicated in certain situations or for certain individuals (notably pregnant or breastfeeding women, as well as children).

Essential Oils for Oral Use

Why use them?

This is the most effective route for supporting digestion, the ENT sphere, etc. However, this method of administration should never be used without consulting a healthcare professional, as some essential oils may not be suitable for certain organs.

How to use them?

Essential oils should never be swallowed pure; they must always be diluted in a fatty substance (such as oil) because they are not soluble in water. You can also take them on a half sugar cube or in a teaspoon of honey. Be careful, they should be consumed in very small quantities (1 to 2 drops maximum). Then drink a glass of lukewarm water or tea. Another use has emerged in recent years, though not therapeutic: cooking. One to two drops in preparations are enough to flavor dishes.

Which ones?

Carrot or lemon for digestion, true lavender for cough, tea tree for seasonal well-being, cinnamon for microbial balance, etc.

Essential Oils for Topical Use

Why use them?

This is the most obvious use for beauty care, and also the recommended use for addressing certain skin challenges. Again, essential oils should never be used pure. Dilute them in a body oil, cream, or lotion at a ratio of 15 to 20 drops per 50 ml of base. As an additional precaution, some essential oils are photosensitizing (such as lemon or bergamot), so you should not expose yourself to the sun in the hours following application.

How to use them?

48 hours before first use, check that you are not sensitive by applying a small amount of essential oil mixed with a fatty substance to the inside of the elbow. Then apply by massage or use (diluted in sweet almond oil) in the bath.

Which ones?

Orange and lavender for a relaxing bath, cypress for venous circulation, wintergreen for muscle well-being, fragonia for oily skin, etc.

Essential Oils for Inhalation

Why use them?

If inhaled, some essential oils can be useful for the respiratory pathways. Otherwise, the most common use is via a diffuser, which helps purify the environment, ease certain tensions, and encourage sleep.

How to use them?

For inhalation, use 2 to 3 drops in a bowl of water. For diffusion, always use a device or support specifically designed for essential oils.

Which ones?

Mandarin for better sleep (see also the article: 7 Essential Tips for Sleeping Well Without Prescription Aid), peppermint to purify the air and eliminate odors, eucalyptus to clear the respiratory pathways, etc.
