Vision Postbiotic is a postbiotic supplement comprising 70 billion Lacticaseibacillus paracasei bacteria per capsule. These beneficial bacteria, which occur in the gut microbiota, have been inactivated by gentle heat treatment to safeguard the integrity of their cell components.

This is the first patented postbiotic specifically studied in the context of eye health, and more precisely, eye fatigue.

Highly-promising, it is part of our Hearing and Vision Health category.

What is Behind the Benefits of the Postbiotic Lacticaseibacillus Paracasei?

Lacticaseibacillus paracasei is a type of bacteria often used for fermenting dairy products. It is also found in the human gut microbiota and oral microflora.

A number of studies suggest it produces a variety of beneficial bioactive metabolites for human health (1), and that it helps trigger positive effects such as protection of the gastric epithelium, indirect production of mucin and immunomodulation of the gut (2).

More recent studies suggest that its cell components are able to stimulate immune cells in the eye and prompt them to modulate inflammatory responses caused by eye fatigue.

Why a Lacticaseibacillus Paracasei Postbiotic rather than a Probiotic?

In most cases, bacteria must be alive in order to exert a positive effect on human health. Hence the importance and complexity of keeping them alive until they reach the gut.

But in the case of Lacticaseibacillus paracasei, several studies have shown benefits even from non-live bacteria; their inactive cell components interact with proteins and cells in the body, triggering various chain reactions. This is obviously not exclusive to this species of bacteria: a large number of postbiotics, such as Akkermansia Muciniphila have emerged in recent years.

Since efficacy does not depend on biological status in this case, it is easier for both the manufacturer and consumer to rely on a postbiotic, rather than a probiotic. Non-live postbiotics are more stable and more heat-resistant.

What are the Symptoms of Eye Fatigue?

Eye fatigue, which is nowadays primarily caused by computer screen work, can manifest in a temporary decrease in visual performance, as well as subjective symptoms and reversible physiological changes (3). It has become a genuine concern in occupational health.

Eye symptoms: discomfort and tension in the eyeball, eye dryness, heavy eyelids, tingling, pain on touch, a gritty sensation in the eyes, etc.

Visual symptoms: decreased visual acuity as the day goes on, impaired field of vision, difficulty focusing and switching between distance and near vision, glare, abnormal persistence of consecutive images, blurred vision, etc.

General symptoms: frontal headaches, drowsiness, dizziness, neck and head pain during and after work, etc.

These symptoms normally disappear after a good night’s sleep but eye fatigue can build up over days or even weeks if the causes are not addressed. Predisposing factors include insomnia, smoking, alcohol, medications, certain eye complaints, wearing glasses, nutritional imbalances, slow reading, etc.

How should this Lacticaseibacillus Paracasei Postbiotic be Taken on a Daily Basis?

We recommend adults to take 2 capsules daily, which equates to 140 billion bacteria a day.

In addition, you can help reduce the intensity of eye fatigue by taking the following steps:

  • If your job involves working at a computer, try to alternate it with another kind of office work during the day.
  • Make sure your screen is positioned 50 to 70 cm away from your eyes, i.e., an arm’s length, and in front of you rather than off to the side.
  • Avoid placing your computer screen too close to a wall: when you look above the screen, your eye must be able to stop focusing for a moment. Think about looking into the distance every now and then, and allow your eyes to wander for a minute, repeating this hourly if possible.

Which Other Supplements can you Take to Support your Eye Health?

You can take any of the following supplements alongside our postbiotic, preferably under the guidance of a health professional:

  • Antioxidant supplements, especially those containing anthocyanins or proanthocyanidins.
  • Lutein and zeaxanthin supplements, two natural ingredients known to support eye health, which are found in the macula and retinal tissue. They help ensure optimal vision in daylight and are very important as they cannot be produced by the body.
  • Astaxanthin, supplements, another carotenoid thought to help reduce eye strain.
  • Any supplement that helps promote dilation of the blood vessels, supplying the optic nerve and thus providing the photoreceptors with sufficient nutrients. We are thinking primarily about Bilberry Extract, made from wild bilberries.

In addition, we recommend adopting a healthier lifestyle throughout the supplementation period.
